Piet Keizer rejects honorary Ajax status
Piet Keizer announced Monday that he no longer wants to be regarded as an honorary member of Ajax football club. The former left wingman did not explain his decision, which comes after he recently withdrew from a technical committee to reform the Amsterdam club under Johan Cruyff.
Chairman Uri Coronel reacted with surprise to the news. “I regret that such a prominent Ajax figure no longer wants to be an honorary member. I am only aware of the decision and not the substantive grounds, so I cannot comment.”
Keizer 67 played for Ajax between 1960 and 1976. He won the World Cup with the club and the European Cup 1 three times. As a left wingman, he captured the league title six times with Ajax and brought the KNVB Cup to the capital five times. He was appointed an honorary member of Ajax on 22 January 2010.
