Petten nuclear facility to remain closed
The Dutch nuclear reactor will remain out of operation until November due to servicing problems.18 September 2008
AMSTERDAM --The Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) announced on Wednesday the nuclear research reactor in the town of Petten will remain closed until November, one month longer than initially announced.
The delay means the facility will be unable to supply medical isotopes needed for cancer treatments.
Hospitals across Europe are facing shortages because there are very few other suppliers. For example, Belgian and French manufacturers have also suspended operations due to maintenance and operating problems.
The reactor has been out of operation since August. After major servicing during summer 2008, gas bubbles in the cooling system, caused by corrosion of the pipes, meant the reactor could not turned on again.
An NRG spokesperson said they maintain almost daily contact with their customers and hope to find them alternatives.
