EINDHOVEN – The petrol price has hit a record high on Thursday. Consumer association United Consumers says the average recommended price from the five largest oil companies has reached EUR 1.553 per litre.
This means an increase of fourth tenths of a cent from the previous record high, dating from September 2005 when motorists were paying EUR 1.549 for a litre of petrol.
The increase to petrol prices at that time was due a suspension in oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico because of hurricane Katrina.
United Consumers says the recommended price has barely dipped below EUR 1.50 this year. If prices remain unchanged, motorists will spend EUR 100 more on petrol this year than last.
The diesel price has almost hit a record high with EUR 1.242 per litre.
