DE BILT – The storm hitting the Netherlands on Thursday is expected to be at its heaviest at about midday. A spokesperson for the Royal Meteorological Institute (KNMI) said this today.

The KNMI already issued a warning on Wednesday that heavy wind gusts would sweep the country Thursday.

Gusts will reach wind force 9 all along the Dutch coast today, the KNMI says. In the north-western coastal area (the tip of Noord-Holland province and the Wadden Islands) winds could reach force 10, at speeds of 105 to 110 km per hour.

Heavy gusts of up to 90 km per hour are expected inland. The spokesperson says this could cause serious disruption to traffic. The evening rush hour will almost certainly involve delays due to the weather.

The storm will die down in the course of the evening, says the weather institute.
