A major anti-Israel demonstration has been held in the centre of The Hague.

THE HAGUE - The protesters believe the Israely army has used excessive violence against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

They were demanding the Netherlands take a tougher stance against Israel.

The authorities deployed large numbers of additional police officers, but there were no incidents.

The organisers had counted on between 5,000 and 15,000 participants, but only 1,500 people showed up.

The demonstration was organised by the main mosques in the Netherlands. Anti-Israel demonstrations were also held elsewhere in the country.

The Israeli national tourist board has left the Holiday Fair in Utrecht one day early following a series of threats received during last week.

On Saturday, a visitor verbally harassed staff at the organisation's booth at the fair.

The tourist board's head office in Jerusalem then decided to leave one day early.
