Patients overstay in hospital

New financing rules for home care are causing patients to stay in hospital longer than necessary.

THE NETHERLANDS - The National Association of Nurses has warned Welfare Minister Jet Bussemaker that patients are staying in hospital one or two longer because of extra paperwork following the introduction of new rules on 1 January.

Confusion over the new rules means that ensuring that the home care is covered by health insurance companies takes much longer.

Hospital care, the branch warns, is far more costly than home care.
