THE NETHERLANDS - Deputy interior minister Ank Bijleveld has assured MPs that the electronic chip in the new Dutch passport does not present a security problem.

She was summoned to appear in parliament following reports about an alleged defect in the chip.

Scientists at Nijmegen University discovered that with special equipment they could see whether someone was carrying a passport and what nationality it was.

Bijleveld acknowledged this was true, but denied there was any danger. The deputy minister said the new system could not be hacked.
