THE HAGUE – People may be able to pick up documents like driver's licenses and passports at the post office by the end of the year. A spokesperson for Postkantoren BV said this on Friday
"We hope to start with an initial trial by the end of the year," said the spokesperson. He said talks are being held with several dozen municipalities.
The advantage for consumers is that they will also be able to pick up documents on Saturdays, when many city halls are shut.
The post offices hope the service will draw more people to their locations, and hopefully lead to more turnover.
The service is not expected to cost consumers any more, but municipalities may have to pay for the arrangement.
A spokesperson for the home affairs ministry said the announcement from Postkantoren BV is very premature. The permission for a trial has not yet been obtained and if it is granted, a very limited number of municipalities will participate, certainly not dozens.
One of the concerns about the arrangement is whether all the security safeguards in the issuing of passports can be guaranteed.
