THE HAGUE – The Council for Child Protection and other agencies must be allowed to make unannounced home visits if there are indications that a child is being abused. Christian democrat CDA MP Çoskun Çörüz proposed this today in an emergency debate on child abuse.

The debate on Thursday was called in response to alarming figures published yesterday which indicate that more than 100,000 children in the Netherlands suffer abuse or neglect each year – a figure much higher than previously assumed.

Parliament was shocked at these figures. Most of the factions think that measures announced by Youth and Family Affairs Minister André Rouvoet to address the problem are inadequate.

Rouvoet will respond to Parliament this afternoon.
