THE HAGUE – A parliamentary majority of Christian democrat CDA, Labour PvdA, Liberal VVD and Democrats D66 wants to open the border fully as of 1 May to workers from the former East Bloc countries that joined the EU in 2004.

PvdA MP Ton Heerts said on Wednesday that Social Affairs Minister Piet Hein Donner had taken adequate measures to prevent exploitation of the workers. Last week coalition party PvdA and Green-Left Groenlinks still had their doubts.

Heerts does want Donner to make haste with an investigation into whether workers can be given more rights to claim back wages. The minister promised last week that he would look into whether irresponsible employers could be prevented from evading their duty to pay workers fairly and provide safe working conditions.
