In the Dutch Premier League, the race for the championship is still a duel between PSV and FC Twente. Both teams played slightly disappointing home games at the weekend, but the results were sure to please their supporters.

PSV beat Heracles Almelo 5-2, while FC Twente defeated De Graafschap 2-0. PSV en FC Twente now both have a four-point lead over FC Groningen, which beat Vitesse on Friday 4-1. Ajax watched the gap between it and the main contenders for the title increase to five points. The Amsterdam club played a disappointing home match against NEC 1-1, which dominated the game in the first half. Mido scored for Ajax in the 76th minute, but NEC’s Bram Nuytinck scored the equalizer only two minutes later.

PSV did not finish off Heracles until the Almelo team lost defender Peter Reekers after he was shown a second yellow card. Ola Toivonen, Ibrahim Afellay and Marcus Berg gave the Eindhoven team a 5-2 victory. Theo Janssen once again saved the day for FC Twente 2-0, breaking De Graafschap’s resistance with two penalties.

AZ now has the same number of points as Ajax. The two-fold national champion surprisingly easy beat ADO Den Haag 0-2, which had to make do without Wesley Verhoek, who has been suspended. FC Utrecht had to thank Jan Wuytens for its victory over Heerenveen in a home game 2-1. Wuytens, who failed to make any kind of positive impression during Thursday’s match against Napoli, scored the deciding goal in the final minute of the match.

Willem II won its fourth point of the season in a home game against Feyenoord. The Tilburg club, the lowest ranking team in the Premier League, played the Rotterdam team to a draw thanks to an own goal by mid-fielder Ricky van Haaren in the 84th minute. 1-1.

The matches between Excelsior - NAC Breda and VVV-Venlo - Roda JC were cancelled as a result of the wintry weather.

The top five after 17 matches: 1. PSV - 37 points 2. FC Twente - 37 points 3. FC Groningen - 33 points 4. Ajax - 32 points 5. AZ - 32 points
