PM: new Afghanistan mission "undesirable"

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende appears to be backing statements made by Defence Minister Eimert van Middelkoop ruling out a large new mission in Afghanistan.

THE HAGUE - The defence minister told parliament on Thursday that the armed forces lacked the capacity for such a mission.

Today the prime minister described a new mission similar in size to the one currently under way in Uruzgan as extremely undesirable.

The prime minister also said capacity was a limiting factor.

The statements come after weeks during which the cabinet has given confusing signals regarding a possible extension of the military mission in Afghanistan.
