AMSTERDAM – Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende expects that the new government will have fewer confrontations with the opposition than the last one.

"The opposition and coalition were often in direct conflict during the last government term. The situation is different now."

The prime minister said this after the cabinet meeting on Friday. He was reflecting on the long debate in parliament on Thursday on the government policy statement.

"We had quite a discussion. Everyone took part in the debate vigorously," Balkenende said with regard to the faction leaders.
