Outcry over fire arms inspections

31st August 2011, Comments 0 comments

The conservative VVD says it’s unacceptable that senior police officers have no idea how many gun permits are being issued.

Research by public broadcaster NOS shows that most police forces have no idea how many weapons are being legally held or whether inspections are conducted on a regular basis.

VVD MP Janine Hennis-Plasschaert wants her fellow party member Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten to discuss the issue with regional commanders as soon as possible.

She is particularly upset because it has been common knowledge for some time that the system is not working. Ms Hennis-Plasschaert feels there should be a stronger sense of urgency.

Socialist Party MP Ronald van Raak emphasised that additional automation costs should not come at the expense of the number of police officers on the beat.
