Unidentified criminals have robbed the players of the Dutch national under-17 football team, which is taking part in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011. The burglary took place in a hotel in the town of Morelia, where the Netherlands lost their first group match 1-0 to Democratic Republic of Congo.

A spokesperson for the team said “We deeply regret this incident” but said he had no further comment. “We are in touch with the local police and FIFA about the incident. That’s all we have to say about it. We are here to play football.”

The Dutch team is to play its second group match - against North Korea - on Tuesday. A match against host country Mexico is scheduled for Friday.
