One million people to switch health insurance
More than one million people will have swapped health insurance company by the end of the six-week window for change on December 31, says comparison website ZorgKiezer.nl.
Many people are dropping top-up policies because of the cost or increasing their own-risk payment to a maximum €850 in return for lower premiums.
The own-risk element in healthcare is going up from €220 to €350 in 2013.
The basic healthcare package is determined by the government but insurance companies are free to develop additional policies to cover uninsured items like alternative health therapies and extra physiotherapy.
People have to cancel their existing health insurance policy by the end of the year but have a further month to sign up with a new provider.
Other comparison websites on Monday reported they were very busy as people rushed to beat the deadline. 'We've had several hundred people switching today,' Erik Hordijk, directer of website Verzekeringssite.nl told news agency ANP.
