One million Dutch holidaymakers began their summer break this weekend. A little over half headed abroad, with Spain, Turkey, Greece and Italy among the most popular destinations for those travelling by plane.

Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport, which handled 475,000 travellers in just the past few days, also issued far more emergency travel documents than normal. On Sunday it handed out 42, more than twice the number for a normal day.

By contrast, Rotterdam Airport was much quieter, with only five extra flights departing on Saturday and Sunday.
