Part of the roof of De Grolsch Veste, the home stadium of Enschede football club FC Twente, collapsed around noon on Thursday.

Local media say one person was killed and 12 injured, but the police have not confirmed these figures. The fire brigade is using heavy equipment in an attempt to lift the collapsed section of the roof.

Local newspaper reports that the roof collapsed after two girders snapped. An eyewitness said there were people on the roof when it collapsed. “It was like a major storm was coming and everything in the building began to shake. At first we thought it was an earthquake.”

De Grolsch Veste is undergoing its second major renovation, which was intended to increase the stadium’s capacity to 30,000 visitors. FC Twente is scheduled to play its first match in its home stadium in less than a month.
