AMSTERDAM – Cyclists who juggle a mobile phone call while pedalling could soon face a fine similar to car drivers who fail to chat hands-free, said transport minister Karla Peijs.

Since there has been research conducted into just how dangerous it is to cycle and chat at the same time, the Minister will look into this before deciding whether to amend traffic laws to make it a finable offence.

Car drivers caught illegally talking on a mobile currently face a minimum EUR 140 fine up to a maximum of EUR 2000 or two months in jail.
