One dead as tornado hits Dutch campsite
A woman was killed in the east of the Netherlands when a storm passed across the country. She was staying at a lakeside campsite with her family; their caravans and twenty others were swept into the water when a tornado struck the area. Eight people sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.
Rescue services from the nearby town of Doetinchem had considerable difficulty reaching the spot, as roads were blocked by fallen trees and electricity pylons.
The zone of stormy weather swept across the country on Wednesday evening, putting an end to a week of tropical temperatures. Hurricane-force gusts caused widespread damage to roofs and trees in the eastern half of the country. Road and rail traffic was blocked in many places; lorries were blown over and roots of falling trees ripped apart gas mains. In the city of Nijmegen 40,000 homes were without electricity after a transformer station was damaged.
Dozens of horticulture glasshouses in the provinces of Limburg and Noord-Brabant were shattered by outsize hailstones, heavy rain and winds.
