Oldest Dutch person turns 110

12 September 2007, MIDDELBURG – The Netherlands' oldest resident is celebrating her birthday with cake and flowers on Wednesday. 110-year-old Grietje Jansen Anker from Middelburg will mark the occasion with a small gathering and has said no thank you to a visit from the mayor or the commissioner of the queen.

MIDDELBURG – The Netherlands' oldest resident is celebrating her birthday with cake and flowers on Wednesday. 110-year-old Grietje Jansen Anker from Middelburg will mark the occasion with a small gathering and has said no thank you to a visit from the mayor or the commissioner of the queen.

"We are celebrating here in the home," said a spokesperson for the Roggeveen care centre in Middelburg. The birthday lady does not think her age is an achievement, and therefore does not want any attention or publicity, the spokesperson added.

Grietje Anker was born in Vlissingen on 12 September 1897 and spent part of her married life in 's-Gravenzande. She has three children and numerous grandchildren and grandchildren, who will be joining her for her birthday today.
