AMSTERDAM – Municipal official Jan Rozema (ChristenUnie) has resigned his duties performing marriage ceremonies because the municipal council in Smallingerland now demands that all marriage officials agree to perform ceremonies for both heterosexual and homosexual couples.

The local council in the Frisian municipality has the same composition as the government: Labour PvdA, Christian democrat CDA, and ChristenUnie. After a motion from the local PvdA faction, the municipal council approved the requirement that officials be willing to perform marriages for all couples, gay or straight.

Rozema will remain an alderman however.

ChristenUnie had insisted that the coalition accord contain a clause to protect officials who refuse to perform same sex marriages on principle, as long as there is another official in the municipality who is willing to do so. Many municipal councils have since passed motions to require officials to perform same-sex marriages nonetheless.
