Oerol island arts festival has bumper year
This year’s Oerol arts festival on the island of Terschelling attracted 57,000, up 2000 on last year.Terschelling -- This year’s Oerol arts festival on the island of Terschelling attracted 57,000, its organisers report, up 2000 on last year. The 28th edition of the ten-day festival closed on Sunday.
The Oerol Festival features theatre, music and art in venues spread across the entire island, either outdoor or in barns or sheds.
Terschelling is one of the five West Frisian Islands or Wadden Islands. It lies about 30 kilometres off the northern coast. The festival bases its audience figures not on ticket sales but on estimates by the company that operates the ferry to the island.
Oerol began in the early 1980s as a small street festival organised by a local café owner but has grown to become a major arts event featuring a wide range of Dutch and international artists. The café owner, Joop Mulder, is still the artistic director of Oerol, but also of this year’s New York 400 festival on Governors Island in New York. The festival celebrates the 400-year relationship between New York and the Netherlands.
