VOORBURG – The number of jobs in the Netherlands rose by almost 3 percent in the second quarter of this year, to a total of 7.8 million, the highest number ever. This emerged from preliminary figures published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) on Friday.

Almost all sectors contributed to the growth in jobs. Just more than half of the growth can be attributed to professional services, involving mostly temporary jobs.

The thriving economy has created extra jobs that many employers first hire temporary workers to fill, the CBS said. There was remarkable growth in the trade sector, where the number of jobs rose to 34,000. Healthcare also remained an important generator of jobs, with 27,000 extra positions.

The growth in industry and the government sector lagged behind other sectors.

The CBS says the number of jobs is growing as fast as it did in the second half of the 1990s. An additional 200,000 jobs were created each year between 1995 and 2000.
