A total of 1,475 people has been expelled this year as compared to 859 eight years ago.

THE NETHERLANDS – The number of foreigners declared persona non-grata by the Netherlands has nearly doubled over the past eight years.

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service has expelled 1,475 people this year, compared with 859 in the year 2000.

The justice ministry said the increase is the result of a change in the law in 2002. The new law permits the authorities to expel foreign residents who have been sentenced to one month in prison or one month of community work.

Before 2002 they could only be expelled if they had received a one-year prison sentence.
