North Holland rejects staff headscarves ban
The provincial government of North Holland on Monday voted down a proposal to ban its staff from wearing Islamic headscarves. The motion was put forward by the populist Freedom Party PVV.
The PVV says the headscarves are a symbol of Islam’s oppression of women and are bad for integration. It argues that councillors and civil servants should set a good example. “Provincial personnel should be seen to be completely independent,” says the PVV’s Hero Brinkman.
