No more time limit on serious crimes

The Dutch government wants to do away with the time limit on prosecuting serious crimes such as rape, human trafficking, manslaughter and serious cases of child sex abuse. A proposal to this end by Security and Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten was approved at today’s cabinet meeting.

At present a no-time-limit rule only applies to crimes that carry a life sentence, such as murder.

The new proposal also calls for an extended time limit of 20 years on prosecuting crimes that carry a sentence of eight years or more. The government argues that the most serious crimes should always be subject to prosecution and that those who commit them should not escape punishment simply because enough time has elapsed.
