Instead, garden centre Intratuin will release the insects in its butterfly garden.

THE NETHERLANDS – Garden centre Intratuin will not be selling live butterflies as Mother's Day gifts after protests from the Animal Rights Party and the Butterfly Foundation.

The thistle butterflies, which were going to be sold in the Intratuin in Rhoon near Rotterdam, will be priced at EUR 6.99 each.

Intratuin Wednesday said the sales promotion is aimed at highlighting the plight of some butterfly species in the Netherlands and expects purchasers to release the insects within 24 hours, thus boosting the butterfly population.

Instead of selling them, the garden centre has agreed to release the insects in its specially designed butterfly garden.
