HAARLEM – Police in Haarlem and other cities have arrested at least nine suspects for trading in illegal fireworks. The police announced this on Wednesday. More than 1,750 kg of fireworks was confiscated.

Four Haarlem residents – a 36-year old woman and men aged 23, 29 and 42 – were arrested last week after 1,000 kg of illegal fireworks was found in a home on the Amsterdamse Vaart in Haarlem.

A man from Obdam was caught in the act of selling illegal fireworks to a man from Heerhugowaard. The police found 600 kg in an apartment in Heerhugowaard. Three men from this town, aged 22, 28, and 36, were arrested as accomplices, the police said.

Police say the storage of the fireworks posed a danger of fire and/or explosion. The interregional Environment Team tracked down the illegal activities partly due to reports to the anonymous crime reporting hotline.

The police also confiscated 1,000 kg of illegal fireworks from a building on the Puntweg in Spijkenisse. Agents arrested a 49-year-old Rotterdam man and a 33-year-old Spijkenisse man in connection with the find, police said Wednesday.
