AMSTERDAM — The Foreign Police service (Vreemdelingenpolitie) has established the identity of the head-injury patient who lay in a hospital in Nijmegen for two months without saying a word.

He is a 56-year-old Chinese man who is illegally resident in the Netherlands, police in Utrecht said on Thursday.

The man was admitted with a serious head injury to St. Radboud hospital in Nijmegen on 5 May. He did not have any identification papers, and attempts to get him to talk were unsuccessful. He was not on any missing persons list and no relatives came forward, despite public appeals.

He had been found lying on a street in Nijmegen. An investigation established his injury was not the result of an assault.

On 4 July he was moved to a specialist treatment centre where medical staff and a translator managed to get information from him that helped establish his identity.

Police say he cannot be deported at this stage because of the state of his health.
