Nijmegen hides its bronze

The council in the eastern city of Nijmegen has removed ten bronze statues from their pedestals - to prevent them being stolen.

Since April this year, three bronzes and one statue that was probably wrongly mistaken for bronze have disappeared from the city streets.

The council says the pieces which have been removed were the most vulnerable since they could easily be sawed through. They include the well-known statue of Mariken van Nieumeghen which normally stands in the main market square.

The city has a total of 60 bronze artworks in public locations.
