AMSTERDAM – The municipality of Nijmegen is going to create a portfolio of job applicants of ethnic background.

When vacancies arise in positions where ethnic minorities are under-represented the municipality will first invite suitable candidates from the portfolio for an interview before publishing the job opening.

The city council announced this plan on Tuesday. The municipality also wants to hire more younger employees and elderly workers. Women should be given more opportunities for promotion.

Almost 2,000 officials are employed by the Nijmegen municipality.
