BRUSSELS – The Netherlands will be just as ungovernable as Belgium after the next elections, prominent liberal VVD member Frits Korthals Altes said in Brussels on Tuesday.

The former minister was referring to the shrinking support for parties in the political centre. "Already an extreme party like the ChristenUnie has had to be called in to form a government." The large following of former VVD member Rita Verdonk could further complicate matters in the next government formation process.

Korthals Altes spoke in Brussels at a debate with Flemish liberal Herman de Croo. The cabinet formation process in Belgium is quickly approaching the European record. As a result of the complicated election results and the growing opposition between Dutch and French speaking communities the formation process there has broken Belgium's own record of 149 days.
