AMSTERDAM – Amsterdam dog owners who leave home without a plastic bag to clean up after their dogs are risking a fine of EUR 50. The Amsterdam municipality put tougher regulations into effect this week to require residents to pick up after their dogs.

Anyone walking a dog – whether or not the animal has dirtied the sidewalk -  must have a bag or small spade on hand to dispose of the dog dirt in a waste bin.

The municipality hopes the tougher regulations will help clean up the city's sidewalks. Dog dirt on the walkways has been top on the list of Amsterdam residents' pet peeves for years.

All dog owners in Amsterdam will be sent a "clean up baggie" at the end of this week to inform them of the regulation, the municipality said on Tuesday. The sidewalk police will be keeping an eye on them.
