New record for Rotterdam port
The port of Rotterdam, Europe's biggest and fourth in the world, said Thursday it had emerged stronger from the global economic crisis with a new throughput record of 430 million tons for 2010.
"This is 11.1 percent more than in 2009 and 2.1 percent more than in the previous record year 2008," said a statement.
Imports rose by 12 percent to 306 million tons, and exports by nine percent to 124 million tons, the port said, citing "the 15 percent growth in world trade and the flourishing German economy."
Hans Smits, chief executive officer of the port authority, predicted throughput to grow by two to three percent to about 440 million tons in 2011.
