AMSTERDAM - A shop in Bergen, North Holland, will be selling new herring from Friday, five days earlier than the official date. Fishmonger Michel Heusy said he would not be keeping to the official opening date of 14 June. ‘It only benefits the supermarkets,’ he said.

The opening of the herring season was postponed for the first time in history this year because the fish had not acquired adequate levels of fat due the cold spring. The new starting date for the season was set at 14 June.

Heusy dismissed claims that this year’s new herring is below quality. ‘The herring are first-rate this year, and the percentage of fat in them is fine,’ he said. The fishmonger said his customers were happy to see the new herring appearing earlier than the official date.

‘Everyone wants herring,’ he said. ‘The demand is so great that I’ve had to order more.’
Meanwhile, a fishmonger in Oudenbosch, in North Brabant, said that he would be selling new herring from today.

The Dutch Fish Bureau reacted furiously to the announcements. The organisation would consider introducing a proscription on early sales of new herring next year, backed by fines, said director Tilly Sintnicolaas. The Bureau accused the fishmongers of being interested only in profits.
