New general practice for Amsterdam expats: Huisarts aan de Herengracht (sponsored contribution)

Huisarts aan de Herengracht is the new general medical practice of Dr Jan Stinissen, standing for excellent care with a high level of service and aiming to make expats feel at home.

The practice opened its doors in June 2009 and offers Amsterdam citizens a new concept in general medical care: personal attention with service.

Every inhabitant of Amsterdam is welcome as a patient, but with a particular focus  on professionals, expats and their families.  The poorly accessible healthcare system is a common complaint of expats who come to the Netherlands: doctors who are continuously busy, practices that are overloaded and badly accessible, waiting lists for hospitals etc. Dutch people may be used to it, but many expats won't be.

Dutch doctors are very well trained but, while the quality of their care may be excellent, they are very cautious in their prescription and referral behaviour. For the many expats in the Netherlands, this is often not what they are used to. Dutch healthcare does not provide these patients with what they expect.

Huisarts aan de Herengracht knows how it is to be in a busy job and can empathise with people who are leaving home to build up a new life in the Netherlands. You want your basic needs to be well provided for, including a doctor. Care must be easily accessible and of good quality. In addition, you expect that your doctor understands you and comes to a solution together with you. This all accompanied by a high level of service.

You can quickly register with Huisart aan de Herengracht online. Online appointments, repeat prescriptions and email consultations are also available at the website. There is an evening consultation hour so it's no longer necessary to take time off work. Is a blood sample needed? That can be done at the practice; patients do not have to go to a laboratory. If a patient is unable to come to the doctor, the doctor visits the patient. Dr Stinissen is available five days a week so patients always see the same doctor. This service is exceptional for Dutch standards, aiming to make expats feel at home.

When asked why expats should choose him as their huisarts, Dr Stinissen said he loves to work with international patients and "finds it a challenge to be a guide for expats and their families in the healthcare system in the Netherlands." He also hopes that the amazing location in central Amsterdam and the stylish practice make a trip to the doctor an almost a pleasant experience!
