AMSTERDAM — The Dutch Parliament chose Labour PvdA MP Gerdi Verbeet as its new Lower House speaker on Wednesday.
It took two rounds of voting before Verbeet defeated the other two candidates, both of whom were ministers in the outgoing government.
In the third round of voting, Verbeet defeated Maria van der Hoeven (Christian Democrat CDA) by 78 votes to 66. The Liberal VVD candidate, Henk Kamp, was beaten in the second round.
Verbeet takes over from VVD MP Frans Weisglas who lost his parliamentary seat in last month's elections.
She is the Netherlands' second female speaker of parliament, following in the footsteps of PvdA colleague Jeltje van Nieuwenhoven, who was speaker from 1998 to 2002.
