A New Zealander who raped a Dutch tourist at knifepoint in front of her partner has been sentence to 10 years in prison.

NEW ZEALAND – A New Zealander has been sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for raping a Dutch tourist at knifepoint in the region of Southland, New Zealand, in January 2008.

Maakiti Joseph Tipene, 25, was jailed for raping the 22-year-old in front of her partner during a camping holiday.

The couple were backpacking around New Zealand and had been sleeping in their stationwagon at a camping ground in Tuatapere when they were attacked by Tipene.

The judge said Tipene's actions were extremely despicable, cruel, pre-meditated and akin to a home invasion.

"You have destroyed two innocent people's lives. You have destroyed the soul of their existence," said the judge who was quoted in New Zealand media.

The Dutch woman is reported to suffer from mental and physical effects resulting from the rape.

The man was arrested later after his mother recognised photos of the knife in the newspaper.

In 2006 a newly-wed couple were kidnapped in New Zealand during their honeymoon by two men who burst into their campervan. The woman was raped at gunpoint in front of her husband and they were forced to empty their bank accounts at ATMs.

The drama ended after two days when the couple abandoned in a remote area.
