New Zealand Waka Project

9th June 2010, Comments 0 comments

With the financial support of Bank Giro Lottery in the Netherlands, Toi Maori have commissioned Master Waka Builder and Navigator Hekenukumai Puhipi to build a ceremonial waka.

The ceremonial waka will be on permanent loan to Volkenkunde Museum, and will remain as a working exhibition. The whakairo for the waka is being carved by Takirirangi Smith and his team.

As construction is about to begin, we would like to invite you to the 'kick-off' of the Waka project at the Volkenkunde Museum (Streenstraat 1, Leiden) on Thursday 10 June at 16h00.

The Mayor of Leiden, the Ambassador of New Zealand, representatives of the Toi Maori Aotearoa and the Curator Oceania of Museum Volkenkunde would like to provide more information about the meaning of this project to all visitors of the Museum and the city of Leiden. Click here to read more.
