New Year's thugs face fast-track trials

Troublemakers caught causing trouble on New Year’s Eve in the four major cities will be placed on super-quick trials.

THE NETHERLANDS – Courts in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague are introducing super-quick trials to deal with people who cause trouble on New Year's Eve.

The Netherlands' four biggest cities are reserving 2 January to deal with those caught setting fires, destroying property among other crimes during the New Year celebrations.
The super fast-track justice means extra court time will be booked on troublemakers will have to appear in court on 2 January.

Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin who announced the move said courts in the rest of the Netherlands will have ordinary speeded-up trials where suspects will appear in court within 14 days of their alleged crimes.

Last New Year’s Eve saw a large number of crimes including violence against ambulance staff and fire fighters. The four cities reported enormous damage of a few million euros.
