A new cultural lottery hopes to support artists, art institutions and art events to the tune of 50 million euros a year.

The National Art Lottery made this statement at its official launch in The Hague on Thursday.

The lottery is an initiative of art aficionados Jochem Schuijt and Felix Timmermans, who want to "make a substantial contribution to promoting art and culture in the Netherlands."  The first draw will take place in autumn.

For the time being, the ten-euro lottery tickets will only be sold via the internet. Later, art institutions including galleries, art libraries, theatres, museums and festivals will be added as points of sale.

Participants can win a work of art or tickets to the theatre, opera, concerts or ballet performances. The grand prize is 100,000 euros in cash.
