New Amsterdam Bike Slam: sustainable mobility event

4th September 2009, Comments 0 comments

Dutch and American designers battle for the future of urban cycling in New York City, from 11 to 13 September.

For three days, the best minds in transportation from New York City and Amsterdam will square off in the New Amsterdam Bike Slam. The competition is hosted by New York's Transportation Alternatives and Amsterdam's Vélo Mondial, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival on the land that would become New Amsterdam and eventually New York City. This conference/competition explores the aesthetic of cycling and issues of sustainable mobility. The result? A world-class transportation summit, a dance party, a bridge across the Atlantic and a design proposal for advancing cycling in New York City to the level of the Netherlands, the only country with more bikes than people.

Global trends in sustainable mobility
New York and Amsterdam, like many other cities, face mobility challenges which require immediate solutions. Looking at necessary changes in mobility is the objective of the ‘Global trends in sustainable mobility’ symposium. Invited speakers will debate ideas to further our thinking about cities and mobility, responding to such questions as what makes cities not only livable but attractive to live in, and what effects could changes to mobility bring about?
