Development Cooperation Minister Ben Knapen, who is on a visit to Sudan, says the Netherlands will recognise Southern Sudan if a majority votes for secession from the north in a referendum to be held on Sunday.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said on Monday he would respect the outcome of the referendum even if it meant the secession of southern Sudan. The president made his statement during a visit to the southern town of Juba. Mr al-Bashir said he would regret a possible falling apart of the nation, but believes that peace is more important.

The president was always a fierce opponent of southern independence, but has recently adopted a more moderate tone.
