Netherlands widens recognition of Libyan NTC

26th August 2011, Comments 0 comments

The Netherlands not only considers the National Transition Council to be the representative of the Libyan people, it also accepts the NTC as the reprensentative of the state for the first time.   The shift in status means that Libya's frozen assets can be released now that Gaddafi no longer appears in control of the country. The Dutch authorities say they are pleased with the change. The change became apparent in a statement by a contact group in which the Netherlands participates with Luxembourg and Belgium.

The Dutch authorities say the transition council has to ensure a "stable and safe future for the Libyan people". It needs to change into a free and democratic country which respects human rights as the basis for a healthy economy with the help of the international community and the United Nations in particular.

The Netherlands is prepared to help the new Libya "in any way it can".
