Netherlands using ‘wrong’ wood for floor and doors

Merbau used mainly for floors and doors comes from an endangered tree species which has been illegally felled, says Friends of the Earth.

THE NETHERLANDS – The Dutch wing of Friends of the Earth says large quantities of illegal tropical hard woods are still being sold in the Netherlands.

Merbau wood, which is used chiefly for floors and exterior doors, comes from a threatened tree species being illegally felled on a large scale in the Indonesian province of Papua, said the organisation.

Friends of the Earth said Indonesia fell close to two million hectares of rain forest a year – an area half the size of the Netherlands.

Although Dutch builders' merchants, lumberyards and other companies have promised to improve the situation, they have offered few alternatives to the use of what the organisation term as 'wrong wood'.
