The Netherlands is the only country still using the older MK 48 torpedoes.

The Hague -- The Dutch department of defence will invest tens of millions of euros to modernise submarine weapons systems, reports Dutch news agency ANP.

Between EUR 50 to 100 million will be available for the weapons upgrade.

The current Dutch torpedoes work in shallow water and under certain circumstances, but need to be updated if the Netherlands is to continue military cooperation with other countries.

An additional problem is the U.S. supplier will no longer supply all necessary spare parts [of the old system], Defence Minister Jack de Vries told the ANP.

The Netherlands is the only country still using the older MK 48 torpedoes, although the exact number of weapons is kept secret by the department of defence.

The project is expected to be implemented between 2012 and 2018.
