Netherlands reports decrease in numbers of asylum seekers
An immigration policy progress report approved by the cabinet on Friday shows that 6,300 people requested asylum in the Netherlands in the first half of this year, compared to 7,400 in the first six months of 2009, a reduction of nearly 15 percent. The waiting list for filing an asylum request has also become much shorter, partly as a result of the lower number of applicants.
The decision to scrap a special status for Somalian refugees in May 2009 has led to a substantial drop in the number of asylum requests from that country. About 1,400 Somalians requested asylum in the first six months of this year, compared to 3,510 in the first half of 2009, a 60-percent decrease.
