AMSTERDAM – The approximately 30 Dutch troops and police officers stationed in the African country of Sudan will most likely stay on longer than planned to contribute to the UN's peace-keeping mission there.

The cabinet will discuss a proposal from Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen on Friday to extend their presence, insiders confirmed in the AD on Thursday. The Dutch presence will probably be extended for a year.

The Dutch have been in Sudan since March 2006, a year after the UN started its mission there because of the conflict between government troops and rebels.
