LUXEMBOURG – The Netherlands had the third largest per capita gross national product (GNP) in the EU in 2006. This emerged from figures published on Thursday by Eurostat, the EU's statistical agency.

Luxembourg topped the list, followed by Ireland. The Netherlands came in third with 31 percent higher than average income.

The eastern European countries that joined the Union over the past years scored below average. Romania and Bulgaria were at the bottom of the list.

Candidate member Turkey however is even poorer. The Turks have an average income of 29 percent of that of the average EU resident.
